RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE:
Philippians 1 & 2
SHOW NOTES:
How do you study the Bible? How do you approach the Bible? How do you continue to learn and grow and mine from it? Whether you’re seasoned in scripture, completely new to reading the Word, or just looking for a fresh approach, follow these simple steps for getting the most out of God’s Word.
Step 1: Choose whatever version you like!
When it comes to choosing a version of the Bible, you’re going to want to take two main factors into consideration–be sure you can understand the version you choose and select a version that is as close to the accurate, original meaning and context of God’s intended message.
Step 2: Assign yourself a Bible reading.
Few things are worse than waking up and having to make decisions on the spot! Predetermining what you’ll be reading in advance is not only beneficial so you have a plan, it increases the likelihood of you sticking to and following through with your Bible reading.
Step 3: Add in a study Bible for some historical context.
Learn more about the author of your reading selection for the day and glean what was going on in the culture and time period. Reading with a historical filter brings less confusion and more understanding. Plus, we are more likely to relate to it.
In addition to a historical one, approach the Bible through a literary context–not all books of the Bible have the same intent. For example, Song of Songs is poetic while Proverbs conveys wisdom. Be ready to approach each book of the Bible a little differently.
Studying the Bible isn’t just about “then,” it’s for now! The Bible is more than a storybook to read. It’s the living, active word of God. It’s the Holy Spirit’s way of taking the words on the page and speaking directly to us.
You can reread the same scripture in a month and the Word can reveal something completely new to you. As you read the Word of God, come to it with expectation. Pray for understanding and clarity so you can apply the Bible to your life–to worship and live for Jesus Christ.
